Every human being carries a shadow self: the hidden emotions, stories, patterns, and memories we instinctively push away in guise of self preservation. For many, even the idea of acknowledging this shadow stirs discomfort. Almost a mind of its own, that's because thought forms are real and can cause quite a disturbance when we decide to change how we feel inside. Yet, the moment a person becomes aware of this inner platform, a profound spiritual journey begins...
In this post, we explore what the average person actually thinks about when they sense their shadow rising within to be acknowledged, why it’s so difficult to look directly at the emotions stored there, and which energetic allies people often call upon when gathering the courage to face the parts of themselves they’ve avoided.
All of this comes from my direct findings as a Hypnotist, working with hundreds of people for hundreds of different reasons.
What Most People Think About When They Consider Their Shadow Self
1. “I don't understand these feelings, have I finally lost my mind?”
Maybe you have. 🤪 And let's be honest, I’m not a psychiatrist—no medication, no clipboard, and definitely no Freudian beard here! But when it comes to quantum theory and zero point energy, I’m like a Higher Self translator—I've got it covered. Fear not! With a Medical Intake Form in one hand and my Sherlock Holmes-level intuition in the other, we’ll deduce if you’re the ideal candidate for Hypnosis. If you are going through an ego death, I can help.
People often worry that digging into their own thoughts and feelings might uncover flaws, past mistakes, or hidden pain that they can't handle. Sometimes, facing these fears as they come to light can feel like a step backward, especially if they don't feel comfortable with what they think they're "agreeing to" in order to find inner balance. Remember, you're not the same person you were when you first faced those challenges, so stop viewing your experiences through that old lens. This is known as a Karmic loop. You'll keep going through it until you confront/integrate and love what you've considered unsafe within yourself.
2. “Is my shadow the reason I repeat the same patterns?”
The short answer is yes.
Through the knowledge I have accumulated from hundreds of sessions with my clients, I am convinced of this. We by nature do what feel is comfortable, automatically. Even if it keeps us in a sense of imprisonment. ⛓️
Many begin shadow work as a last resort, wondering why certain relationships, reactions, or emotional loops keep coming back. They may even sense that the shadow might be karmic "payback".
The shadow serves as an interface for us to work through ideas (energies) that no longer serve us. It is our friend; it is happy to reflect to us perspectives we hold that cause chaos in our reality. The shadow holds no bias; its only purpose is to bring to light, through feelings, what can be addressed in order to find internal balance, that's it.
In my practice, the single most effective way of moving through karmic cycles is to face the very thing that we recoil from. Its a perfect system, our universe holds. On our own timing, but uncomfortable enough to act on.
3. “If I see the contents within my shadow, will it change how others see me?”
It's natural to be concerned that exploring your own darker emotions could affect how you present yourself to the world. This concern is valid. The great news is that once you confront your inner demons, you'll have released the belief that others' opinions are crucial to your unique experience. 👍🏽 And if you haven't reached this point yet, I am great at providing assistance with this.
4. “What if I’m not strong enough to handle what I find?”
Shadow work can bring up vulnerability; people worry about emotional capacity, stability, or whether they might regress. We never get what we can't handle. This might look like someone holding space with you or you finding the inner power to do it alone. Either way there are points within the journey that require both.
5. “How long will this take?”
It's pretty normal to be scared of getting stuck in a never-ending healing loop. Most people are looking for some guidance, clarity, and a bit of structure so they don’t get lost in their own thoughts. Some people just aren’t ready to take charge of their own feelings. Either way, it's all part of growing and becoming more aware of ourselves and the relationship to what we create around us. Learning to work with the ego is about moving beyond the idea of duality to find a third way. Neutrality is the viewpoint that opens up different possibilities. This idea is grounded in the principle of zero point energy (the quantum field) which includes the awareness of and the calling in of other options.
6. “Will facing my shadow make me more whole?”
Despite the illusion that you are broken: the shadow holds power, creativity, intuition, and gifts waiting to be integrated. While it can be life transforming, it is also an expansion to a wholeness that was forgotten. You are just taking back what was always yours → possibilities of an intended outcome that you are now aware of that exists.
Energetic Helpers People Turn to When Building the Perseverance to Face Their Shadow
Facing the shadow is an act of courage, and people often reach out—energetically or spiritually—to guides that embody strength, truth, compassion, or transformation.

How to Choose a Guide for Shadow Work: Practical Steps
1. Identify what type of support you need.
Do you need protection? Compassion? Fierce transformation? Emotional clarity?
2. Notice which names or energies you feel naturally drawn to.
Your intuition will often point you to the correct guide before you understand why. Be aware of the universe around you and hear the subtle call towards your next step.
3. Research their traditional attributes.
Look into their myths, stories, associated symbols, and how others have worked with them. This will gauge the power they hold, and what you are getting yourself into. Some of these helpers really expedite the healing process and can hold energy that's really intense.
4. Start with a light connection ritual or meditation.
You don’t need elaborate ceremony—just intention, presence, and consent asking to work with the energy.
5. Pay attention to your dreams, synchronicities, and emotional shifts.
Guides often respond in subtle ways first. Depending on where you are at, it will deepen. In my experience this helps gauge the level of commitment you hold for yourself.
Recommendation With Choosing Your Energetic Allies
Work within your belief system.
Embracing your true self rather than conforming to external expectations will reveal the power of your authenticity. Your Shadow Self holds essential parts of you that complete your identity. You'll then begin to notice the universe guiding you; perhaps the same saint or Archangel repeatedly appears on social media or in conversations with friends. Once you take responsibility for your feelings, alignment with your true path, the world will mirror your journey favorably. By noticing and staying connected to these signs, you'll discover an effective way to explore the depths of your true self. You'll recognize this as something that has always been with you, but now you understand its significance as your other half—your shadow, your darkness. Acknowledge it as a partner in your life's journey. When you see the chaos within as purposeful, you will honor it, as it leads you to the inner wisdom that loving every part of yourself is all you need to do.
Final Thoughts
Facing your shadow self is not a sign of weakness—it's the initiation of deep personal evolution. Whether you lean toward deities, dragons, saints, egregores, or cosmic collectives, the right guide will appear in your awareness and help you move through this journey with protection, clarity, and empowerment.
💜 Your shadow doesn’t exist to hurt you—it exists to complete you. And the initiation to this completion is realizing yourself out of duality.
